Ignition System - DISTRIBUTORLESS: Description

The 2.3L engine uses a Distributorless Ignition System (DIS) with a Dual Plug (DP) design. This system consists of a crankshaft mounted Dual Hall sensor, two 4-tower coil packs, DIS ignition module, and the spark angle portion of Electronic Engine Control (EEC-IV). See Fig 1.

The DIS eliminates the distributor by using multiple coils and a "waste-spark" method of coil firing. Each coil fires 2 spark plugs during the compression stroke; the other fires during the exhaust stroke. The 2 coils are mounted together in a coil pack. Each coil pack has 2 tach wires (1 for each coil).
