Test Equipment

The following equipment is recommended to diagnose and test EEC-IV system. Some equipment is REQUIRED to perform tests. DO NOT  attempt to test this system without proper equipment. Damage to vehicle components may result if improper equipment is used.

• The Self-Test Automatic Read-Out (STAR) Diagnostic Tester (Rotunda 007 00004 ) or SUPER STAR II (Rotunda 007-00028 ) is recommended but not required. It is specially built for the EEC-IV system and is used to display the 2-digit (numeric) service codes that are programmed into the control module. There are also a number of aftermarket scan tool testers available.
• Analog Volt/Ohmmeter (VOM) with 0-20V DC range. This can be used as an alternate to diagnostic tester, to read codes only.
• Digital Volt/Ohmmeter (DVOM) with minimum 10-megohm input impedance.
• Breakout Box (Rotunda 014-00322). This is a jumper wire assembly which connects between the vehicle harness and the ECA. The breakout box is REQUIRED to perform certain tests on the system. Ford Motor Co. specifically states that back -probing will cause PERMANENT DAMAGE to the ECA 60-pin connector. The "test pin No." called out in CIRCUIT TESTS refers to Test Pin numbers on breakout box. Once the breakout box has been installed during a test sequence, it may remain connected for the remainder of that test unless otherwise specified. Aftermarket breakout boxes are available.
• Vacuum gauge with 0-30 in. Hg range and resolution (units on scale) of 1 in. Hg.
• Tachometer with 0-6000 RPM range, accuracy +/- 40 RPM, and a resolution of 20 RPM.
• Vacuum pump with 0-30 in. Hg range.
• Timing light.
• Spark Tester (D81P-6666-A or ST-125). A modified side electrode spark plug IS NOT sufficient for these testing procedures.
• Fuel Injection Pressure Gauge (T80L-9974-A).
• 12-volt test light (non-powered type).
• Jumper wire, about 15" long.
• MAP/BP Tester. This unit plugs into MAP/BP sensor circuit and DVOM to check input and output signals. The MAP sensor produces a frequency signal which may be checked using a scope with a millivolt scale or a DVOM that measures frequency.
