Ignition Timing: Adjustments

1. Apply the parking brake and make sure that the vehicle is in the NEUTRAL (M/T) or PARK (A/T) range.
2. START the engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
3. Turn OFF all electrical loads and accessories.
4. Connect a timing light.

Idle Speed Adjustment:






5. Using a jumper wire, connect the GROUND terminal to the TEN terminal on the diagnosis connector.

IG Terminal:






6. Using a tachometer, connect the tachometer positive lead to the IG terminal on the diagnosis connector and the tachometer negative lead to the negative battery post. Check the idle speed and adjust, if necessary.

Crankshaft Pulley:






7. Using the timing light, inspect the ignition timing.

Distributor Bolt:






8. If the marks are not aligned, loosen the distributor mounting bolts and turn the distributor until timing is set at 10° +/- 1° BTDC.
9. Tighten the distributor mounting bolts to 14-19 lbs ft.
10. Remove the jumper wire from the diagnostic connector.
11. Remove the timing light.
12. Remove the tachometer.
