Stator Coil Grounded Testing

  1. Remove and disassemble alternator. This test determines if stator coil is properly insulated. Remove stator from alternator. Set ohmmeter in 1000-ohm range.
  2. Connect one ohmmeter probe to one stator lead and other probe to stator laminated core. Ohmmeter reading should be infinity. If meter needle moves, stator winding is shorted to core and stator must be replaced. Repeat test for each stator lead.
NOTE: DO NOT touch metal ohmmeter probes or stator leads during resistance test. Incorrect reading will result.
