Oxygen Sensor: Description and Operation

Exhaust Gas Oxygen (EGO) Sensor:

Oxygen Sensor Operation:

PURPOSE
The Exhaust Gas Oxygen (EGO) generates and supplies a voltage signal to the ECA which reflects exhaust gas oxygen content. This is interpreted as either rich or lean, and the ECA regulates injector operation as needed to maintain the proper air/fuel mixture.

OPERATION
The platinum surface electrode sampling tip measures and compares oxygen content difference between ambient atmosphere and exhaust gas. The difference causes the sensor to generate a voltage signal between 0 Volts (lean) and approximately 1.0 Volts.
