Combination Switch

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1994 Mercury Tracer and 1994 Ford Escort. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Unplug connectors from combination switch. Set hazard flasher switch to OFF position. Test for continuity between specified terminals with switch in each position. See Fig 1 . If continuity is not as specified, or is poor in any switch position, replace combination switch.
  2. To test turn signal switch, perform steps 3) through 5). To test headlight switch, perform steps 6) through 8). To test dimmer switch, perform steps 9) through 11). To test hazard flasher switch, perform step 12). To test windshield wiper/washer switch, see WIPER/WASHER SYSTEMS article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT section.
  3. Set turn signal lever to neutral position. Continuity should not exist between switch pin No. 8 for mating 8-pin connector and switch pin No. 2 for mating 6-pin connector. Continuity should not exist between switch pin No. 8 for 8-pin connector and switch pin No. 2 for 6-pin connector.
  4. Set turn signal lever to left turn position. Continuity should exist between switch pin No. 8 for mating 8-pin connector and switch pin No. 2 for mating 6-pin connector. Continuity should not exist with switch in neutral or right turn positions.
  5. Set turn signal lever to right turn position. Continuity should exist between switch pin No. 8 for mating 8-pin connector and switch pin No. 6 for mating 6-pin connector. Continuity should not exist with switch in neutral or left turn positions.
  6. Make test connections at switch terminals for 8-pin connector. Set headlight switch to OFF position. Continuity should not exist between terminals No. 4 and 7, or between terminals No. 4 and 6.
  7. Set headlight switch to PARK position. Continuity should exist between terminals No. 4 and 6. Continuity should not exist between terminals No. 4 and 7.
  8. Set headlight switch to HEAD position. Continuity should exist between terminals No. 4 and 7, and between terminals No. 4 and 6.
  9. Make test connections at switch terminals for 6-pin connector. Pull and hold flash-to-pass switch toward steering wheel. With switch held in position, continuity should exist between terminals No. 3 and 4. Continuity should not exist with switch released.
  10. Make test connections at switch terminals for 8-pin connector. Set dimmer switch to low beam position (toward steering wheel). Continuity should exist between terminals No. 1 and 5. Continuity should not exist with switch in high beam position.
  11. Set dimmer switch to high beam position (away from steering wheel). Continuity should exist between terminals No. 3 and 5. Continuity should not exist with switch in low beam position.
  12. Make test connections at switch terminals for 14-pin connector. Set hazard flasher switch to ON position. Set turn signal lever to neutral position. Continuity should exist between terminals No. 6 and 14. Continuity should not exist with switch set to OFF position.
