Distributor: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
Distributor directs high voltage ignition coil output to the spark plugs in proper sequence (firing order).

CONSTRUCTION
The distributor is die cast aluminum. The components of the distributor include:

- The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor,

- Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor,

- Ignition Control Module (ICM),

- ignition coil,

- shaft assembly,

- cap and rotor.

OPERATION
The distributor is camshaft driven and turns at one half of crankshaft speed. Rotation is counterclockwise.

The CKP sensor, CMP sensor and ignition control module are used to trigger the ignition coil primary circuit. The distributor cap and rotor directs ignition coil secondary output to the spark plugs.
