Self-Diagnostic System (Expedition)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Navigator, 2002 Ford Expedition, 2001 Lincoln Navigator, and 2001 Ford Expedition. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: This test is a Key On Engine Off (KOEO) test. Ensure gear selector is in Park, and parking brake is engaged. Manufacturer specifies ignition switch position during testing although it may not affect power distribution.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Place gear selector in Park. Ensure parking brake is engaged and brake pedal is released. While holding cruise control OFF button, turn ignition switch to RUN position. CRUISE indicator on instrument cluster will flash once to indicate successful entry into self-diagnostic mode. If CRUISE indicator does not flash as specified, diagnose by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS. If CRUISE indicator flashes once followed by 5 additional flashes, replace speed control servo. Release cruise control OFF button.
  2. Within 5 seconds of entering self-diagnostics, press cruise control ON button. Press remaining cruise control buttons in the following sequence: RESUME, COAST and SET/ACCEL. As each button is pressed, CRUISE indicator should flash. Wait until indicator light goes out to press next button.
  3. After SET/ACCEL button is pressed, CRUISE indicator should flash once. If CRUISE indicator operates as specified, go to next step. If CRUISE indicator does not operate as specified, count number of flashes and perform appropriate test. See FLASH CODE  table.
  4. Immediately after static test has passed, actuator performs a dynamic test by automatically operating throttle .31-.47" (8-12 mm). Observe throttle movement to witness any sticking of cable or linkage. Ensure throttle returns properly. If self-diagnostics does not pinpoint fault, diagnose by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS.
