Side Air Bag Module: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Mercury Monterey and 2004 Ford Freestar. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Foreign objects between side air bag module and seat components may be projected toward occupants during air bag deployment. Personal injury may result. Ensure side air bag module, air bag mounting surfaces, deployment chute and seat back pad are free of foreign objects.
Improper air bag deployment is possible. Personal injury may result. If air bag cover has separated or air bag material has been exposed, air bag may deploy improperly. Air bag module must be replaced. Do not attempt to repair air bag module.
Improper side air bag deployment is possible. Personal injury may result. Check side air bag deployment chute and clips for damage. Deployment chute and clips must not be repaired. If deployment chute or clips are damaged, seat back trim cover and deployment chute must be replaced new as a unit. Deployment chute must properly positioned and completely close for proper air bag deployment.
  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. When installing deployment chute position deployment chute and clips through seat back foam. Insert outboard side of air bag deployment chute between seat back pad and side air bag module, pulling it around outboard side of seat back frame. Insert inboard side of air bag deployment chute between seat back pad and side air bag module, pulling it around inboard side of seat back.
  2. Side air bag deployment chute must encircle air bag module, going completely around side air bag module and seat back frame. Align side air bag deployment chute to side air bag module, ensuring it covers the length, but not the top or bottom of air bag module.
  3. When installing seat back trim cover, ensure necessary wire harnesses, connectors or ducts are through the trim cover openings. If installing NEW air bag module, use NEW mounting nuts. If installing same air bag module, original nuts may be reused. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  4. Connect negative battery cable. With air bag simulators installed at all remaining deployable devices, perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  . Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute for back-up power supply to deplete stored energy. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
