Test B: Doors Do Not Lock/Unlock Using Remote Transmitter

  1. Lock and unlock all doors using door lock switch. If all doors lock and unlock correctly, go to next step. If any door does not lock and unlock correctly, diagnose and repair power door lock concern. Go to SYSTEM TESTS in POWER DOOR LOCKS - RANGER article
  2. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below steering column. Retrieve continuous Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If DTC B2425 is not retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B2425 is retrieved, go to TEST C: REMOTE TRANSMITTER OUT OF SYNCHRONIZATION  .
  3. NOTE: If vehicle is within 1/2 mile of radio or TV towers, remote transmitter operating distance may be reduced.
  4. Press each button on remote transmitter while standing 10 feet away from vehicle. If Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) system does not respond appropriately for any button pressed, go to next step. If RKE system responds appropriately for all buttons pressed, system is operating correctly at this time.
  5. NOTE: Ensure there are at least 2 remote transmitters available for testing.
  6. Stand next to or sit inside vehicle. Press each button on remote transmitter. If RKE system does not respond appropriately for all buttons pressed, go to next step. If RKE system responds appropriately for all buttons pressed, go to step  6 .
  7. Using another (spare) remote transmitter, press each button on spare remote transmitter. If RKE system does not respond appropriately for all buttons pressed, go to next step. If RKE system responds appropriately for all buttons pressed, go to step  11 .
  8. Using NGS tester, enter central security module FUNCTION TEST, TRANSMITTER TIC/DATA through diagnostic tool menus. If there is at least one remote transmitter stored and displayed next to TIC 1 in NGS tester, go to next step. If there are no remote transmitters stored and displayed in NGS tester, program all remote transmitters. See PROGRAMMING REMOTE TRANSMITTER  .
  9. NOTE: When remote transmitter button is pressed, signal received contains TICs for remote transmitter being operated and DATA for remote transmitter button being pressed.
  10. Press and release unlock button on remote transmitter. If NGS tester does not display an 8-digit alpha-numeric code for LAST TIC RECEIVED, or LAST DATA RECEIVED does not match remote transmitter button that was pressed, go to next step. If an 8-digit alpha-numeric code for LAST TIC RECEIVED is displayed, and LAST DATA RECEIVED matches remote transmitter button that was pressed, go to step  9 .
  11. Repeat step 7)  using spare remote transmitter. If NGS tester does not display an 8-digit alpha-numeric code for LAST TIC RECEIVED, or LAST DATA RECEIVED does not match remote transmitter button that was pressed, go to next step. If an 8-digit alpha-numeric code for LAST TIC RECEIVED is displayed, and LAST DATA RECEIVED matches remote transmitter button that was pressed, check remote transmitter battery. If battery is okay, replace and program remote transmitter. See PROGRAMMING REMOTE TRANSMITTER  under PROGRAMMING. If remote transmitter battery is not okay, replace remote transmitter battery.
  12. From NGS tester FUNCTION TEST, monitor spare remote transmitter TIC/DATA using recorded alpha-numeric codes from step 7)  . If TIC RECEIVED matches TIC RECORDED in step 7)  , go to next step. If TIC RECEIVED does not match TIC RECORDED in step 7)  , program remote transmitter(s). See PROGRAMMING REMOTE TRANSMITTER  under PROGRAMMING.
  13. From NGS tester FUNCTION TEST, monitor remote transmitter TIC/DATA. If each remote transmitter button pressed creates expected LAST DATA RECEIVED output, go to step  12 . If any remote transmitter buttons pressed do not create expected LAST DATA RECEIVED output, program remote transmitter. See PROGRAMMING REMOTE TRANSMITTER  under PROGRAMMING.
  14. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 26-pin Central Security Module (CSM) harness connector C274A. CSM is located behind right side of instrument panel. Measure voltage between ground and CSM harness connector C274A terminal No. 25 (Red /Yellow wire). See Figure . If any voltage exists, repair short to ground in Red/Yellow wire between CSM and central junction box. If no voltage exists, reprogram original remote transmitter and retest system operation. If original remote transmitter still does not operate, check remote transmitter battery. If remote transmitter battery is okay, replace remote transmitter.
  15. Disconnect all Central Security Module (CSM) harness connectors. CSM is located behind right side of instrument panel. Check harness connectors for loose, corroded or damaged pins. Repair as necessary. Reconnect all CSM harness connectors and ensure they seat correctly. Operate system and verify concern still exists. If concern still exists, replace CSM. If concern no longer exists, system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by loose, corroded or damaged pin(s).
