Removal & Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2002 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Deactivate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. After disabling air bag system, leave negative battery cable disconnected.
  2. Release tabs and remove ash tray, see STEP 1 in Fig 1. Slide and disengage Restraint Control Module (RCM) harness connectors locking clips. Disconnect RCM harness connectors. Remove 3 RCM mounting bolts and remove RCM from vehicle. See STEP 2 in Fig 1.
  3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Check AIR BAG warning indicator light to ensure system is functioning properly and prove system out.
