Valve Springs: Removal

- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
- Disconnect the ignition wires from the spark plugs.
- Remove the two ignition wire separators from the valve cover.
- Remove the spark plugs.
- Remove the valve cover.
- Remove the rocker arms.
- Install an adaptor and apply 965 kPa of air pressure to hold the valve shut.
- Using the special tool to compress the valve spring and remove the valve spring retainer key and the valve spring.
CAUTION:
Do not pull on the cable when removing the spark plug connector. If necessary remove the ignition coil plug to avoid bending the cable. Turn the spark plug connector slightly before removing to loosen the gasket.
CAUTION:
Pull off the spark plug connector in a straight movement.
NOTE:
If an original spark plug is reused, install it in the same cylinder from which it was removed. New spark plugs may be installed in any cylinder.
NOTE:
Bring the affected piston to top dead center (TDC) to prevent the valves from falling into the cylinder if air pressure is interrupted.
NOTE:
Keep the components in order for reassembly.
