Transmission Control Module (TCM): Removal

NOTE: If removing the TCM to install a new TCM, it is not necessary to remove the TCM mounting bracket. If removing the TCM to service another component, it may be necessary to remove the TCM mounting bracket.
    NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.
  1. Download the module information to the diagnostic tool using the Programmable Modules Installation routine.Use the General Equipment: Ford Diagnostic Equipment
  2. Disable the vehicle high-voltage electrical system.

  3. Remove the air cleaner and outlet pipe.

  4. Remove the cowl panel.

  5. Disconnect the TCM.

  6. NOTE: When disconnecting the high voltage cables from the TCM, cover the TCM terminals with tape or another waterproof seal to keep moisture, water or other fluids from entering the TCM. Failure to cover and seal the TCM terminals can result in damage to the TCM.
  7. Remove the retainers and disconnect the high voltage cables from the TCM.

  8. Before removing the TCM fuse cover, use compressed air to remove any moisture from underneath the TCM fuse cover.

  9. Remove the bolts and the cover.

  10. NOTE: When disconnecting the high voltage DC cables from the TCM, cover the TCM top opening with tape or another waterproof seal to keep moisture, water or other fluids from entering the TCM. Failure to cover and seal the TCM top opening can result in water damage to the TCM.
    NOTE: Do not loosen the high voltage fuse nuts.
  11. Disconnect the electrical connector.

  13. Remove the retainer and disconnect the electrical connector.

  14. NOTE: Be prepared to catch a minimal amount of escaping coolant fluid.
  15. Disconnect and position aside the coolant tubes.

  16. Disconnect the wiring harness retainer.

  17. Remove the retainers and position aside the coolant fluid reservoir.

    NOTE: TCM Mounting Bracket 
  19. Remove the retainer and position aside the wiring harness.
