  1. Lubricate the torque converter pilot hub with Multi-Purpose Grease.

    Material: Motorcraft ® Multi-Purpose Grease Spray / XL-5-A (ESB-M1C93-B)

  2. NOTE: If the transmission is not positioned on the dowel pins, damage to the transmission may occur.

    If the dowel pins were pulled out of the engine block during removal, install new dowel pins in the engine block.

  3. Position the transmission behind the engine and remove the special tool. Remove Special Service Tool: 307-566 Retainer, Torque Converter.

  4. NOTE: Make sure that the installation marks are aligned.

    Align the torque converter stud marked during removal with the flexplate.

  5. NOTE: Make sure that the component is correctly located on the locating dowels.
    NOTE: Make sure that no part of the wiring harness is trapped.
    NOTE: Make sure that no components catch.

    Using the transmission jack, rise the transmission.

  6. Tighten the bellhousing bolts on both sides simultaneously.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  7. Tighten the bellhousing bolts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  8. Tighten the bellhousing bolt.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  9. NOTE: Make sure that new nuts are installed.
    NOTE: Only rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction.

    Install the 4 new torque converter nuts. Use the General Equipment: Magnetic Socket

    Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

  10. Install the starter motor insulator.

  11. Install the starter motor. Refer to: Starter Motor .
  12. Install the transmission support insulator bracket and the bolts.

    Torque: 46 lb.ft (63 Nm)

  14. Raise the transmission until the transmission support insulator bracket reaches the transmission support insulator.

  15. NOTE: Make sure a new bolt is installed.

    Tighten the upper transmission support insulator bolt.

    Torque: 109 lb.ft (148 Nm)

  16. Install the transmission fluid cooler inlet tube.

    1. Lubricate the transmission fluid cooler inlet tube band seals and backing rings with clean transmission fluid.

      Material: Motorcraft ® MERCON ® LV Automatic Transmission Fluid / XT-10-QLVC (MERCON ® LV) (WSS-M2C938-A)

    2. Install the transmission fluid cooler inlet tube and the bolt.

      Torque: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

  17. Install the roll restrictor and bracket and install the bolts.

    Torque: 59 lb.ft (80 Nm)

  18. NOTE: Make sure that new bolts are installed.

    Install the roll restrictor bolts.

    Torque: 92 lb.ft (125 Nm)

  19. Install the LH halfshaft. Refer to: Front Halfshaft LH .
  20. Install the support bar and the bolts.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  21. Install the support bar and the bolts.

    Torque: 124 lb.in (14 Nm)

  22. Position the LH fender splash shield and install the retainers.

  23. Inspect the RH halfshaft hub surfaces for wear or damage and install a new halfshaft, if necessary.

  24. NOTE: If the transmission has been replaced or overhauled, the halfshaft seals do not need to be replaced.

    Install a new RH halfshaft seal. Refer to: Halfshaft Seal RH .

  25. NOTE: Remove the seal protector before completely installing the halfshaft.

    Install the seal protector in the RH halfshaft seal. Install the RH halfshaft in the transmission and remove the seal protector before the halfshaft is fully installed.

  26. Push the RH halfshaft into the differential until the bearing lines up with the bearing bracket.

  27. Install the new halfshaft bearing retaining strap and new nuts.

    Torque:

    Stage 1: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

    Stage 2: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  28. Install the ball joint into the knuckle and install a new bolt and nut.

    Torque: 61 lb.ft (83 Nm)

  29. Position the RH brake hose back and install a new brake hose bolt.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  30. Connect the RH tie rod end to the knuckle and install the new nut.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  31. Install the front wheels and tires. Refer to: Wheel and Tire .
  32. NOTE: Make sure that the component terminals are not bent or damaged.

    Position the bracket. Connect the transmission electrical connectors and attach the wiring harness retainers.

  33. Position the ground cable and install the upper bellhousing bolts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  34. Install the transmission fluid cooler outlet tube.

    1. Lubricate the transmission fluid cooler outlet tube band seals and backing rings with clean transmission fluid.

      Material: Motorcraft ® MERCON ® LV Automatic Transmission Fluid / XT-10-QLVC (MERCON ® LV) (WSS-M2C938-A)

    2. Install the transmission fluid cooler outlet tube and the bolt.

      Torque: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

  35. Position the transmission fluid cooler in place and install the stud, bolt and nuts.

    Torque

    1.: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

    2.: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

    3.: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

  36. Position the selector lever cable, install the bolts and attach the selector lever cable end to the manual lever.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  37. Install the battery tray support bracket.

    • Install the battery tray support bracket and install the nuts.

      Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

    • Connect the electrical connector and attach the wiring harness retainers.

  38. Install the battery tray. Refer to: Battery Tray - 2.5L Duratec (125kW/170PS) .
  39. Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment .
  40. Fill the transmission fluid. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill .
  41. After completing the repairs perform the Misfire Monitor Neutral Profile Correction procedure.
  42. NOTE: If a new solenoid body is installed, the solenoid body strategy must be updated.

    If a new transmission or a new main control was installed, the solenoid body strategy must be updated. Refer to: Transmission Strategy Download .
