Transmission Fluid Level Check

Materials

Motorcraft® MERCON® LV Automatic Transmission Fluid
XT-10-QLVC
WSS-M2C938-AMERCON® LV,

Check 

  1. Start the engine.
  2. With the engine running in PARK make sure the transmission is at normal operating temperature 85-93° C (185-199° F).

    Temperature: 185 °F (85 °C)

    Temperature: 199 °F (93 °C)

  3. Slowly select each gear position, stopping in each position and allowing the transmission to engage.

  4. NOTE: Make sure that the selector lever and the gearshift mechanism are in the PARK (P) position.

    With the engine running, position the selector lever in the PARK (P) position.

  5. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  6. Remove the retainers and the underbody shield.

    NOTE: Be prepared to collect escaping fluid.

    With the vehicle on a level hoist, the engine running in PARK and the transmission fluid at normal operating temperature 85-93°C (185-199°F), remove the oil leveling plug and allow the transmission fluid to drain until it is even with the oil leveling plug hole.

    1. Standard transmission case (M10 plug)
    2. Fuel economy transmission case (M20 plug)

  8. Release the inlet pipe lock, detach the mounts and position the air cleaner aside.

  9. If the transmission fluid is not even with the oil leveling plug hole, remove the transmission vent cap and add clean transmission fluid in increments of 0.25L (0.5 pt) until the transmission fluid is even with the oil leveling plug hole. Refer to: Specifications .

  10. Install the oil leveling plug.

    1. Standard transmission case (M10 plug)

      Torque: 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

    2. Fuel economy transmission case (M20 plug)

      Torque: 26 lb.ft (35 Nm)

  11. Install the underbody shield and the retainers.

  12. Install the transmission vent cap.

  13. Position the air cleaner, attach to the mounts and lock the inlet pipe lock.
