WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 GMC Safari and 1995 Chevrolet Astro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
MODEL IDENTIFICATION

Series (1) Model
"L" AWD Astro & Safari
"M" 2WD Astro & Safari
(1) Fifth character of Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). VIN is stamped on a metal pad on top left end of instrument panel, near windshield.
NOTE: Axle ratio can be identified by the first 3 characters of code that is stamped on axle tube. Refer to the appropriate AXLE RATIO IDENTIFICATION  table. Drive axle is match-balanced with pinion flange (creates a harmonic member that reduces driveline vibration). When replacing ring and pinion gear set, pinion flange assembly, or pinion bearings, replace entire axle assembly with a match-balanced axle assembly.
