Cruise Control Inoperative/Malfunctioning

NOTE: To avoid misdiagnosis, perform PRELIMINARY INSPECTION  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. Check for stored DTCs. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
CAUTION: Tests are designer for use with General Motors Tech 2 scan tool. Generic test equipment may not be able to perform all required test functions.
  1. Following manufacturer's instructions, install scan tool. Retrieve any stored PCM/VCM Diagnostic Troubles Codes (DTCs). Diagnose any stored DTCs. Go to appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If no DTCs are stored, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect cruise control module harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using a test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "F" (Brown wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  32 .
  3. Using a test light, probe between control module harness connector terminal "F" (Brown wire) and terminal "E" (Black/White wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  33 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Turn cruise control switch to OFF position. Using a test light connected to ground, individually probe cruise control module harness connector terminals "A" (Gray wire), "B" (Dark Blue wire) and "C" (Gray/Black wire). If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates on any circuit, go to step  14 .
  5. Turn ignition and cruise control switches to ON position. Using a test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "A" (Gray wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  15 .
  6. Using a test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "B" (Dark Blue wire). Press SET (Set/Coast) switch. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  17 .
  7. Using a test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "C" (Gray/Black wire). Press R/A (Resume/Accelerate) switch. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  18 .
  8. Using a test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "D" (Brown/White wire). If test light illuminates, leave test light connected and go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  19 .
  9. Press brake pedal while observing test light. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step  20 .
  10. Using a test light connected to ground, probe Light Blue wire at cruise control harness connector terminal "G". If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step  21 .
  11. Press brake pedal while observing test light. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  22 .
  12. Using a DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage at cruise control module harness connector terminal "J" (Light Blue/Black wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step  23 .
  13. Raise and support vehicle so that drive wheels may be rotated. Block one of the drive wheels. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Place gear selector in DRIVE position. Using a DVOM connected to ground and set to AC voltage scale, measure voltage at cruise control module harness connector terminal "K" (Dark Green/White wire) while rotating unblocked drive wheel. If voltage varies 0-5 volts, go to step  31 . If voltage does not vary 0-5 volts, go to step  24 .
  14. Check circuit that illuminated test light for short to voltage. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair wire in question as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step  30 .
  15. Check Gray wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "A" and cruise control functional switches harness connector for open or high resistance. Repair Gray wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to next step.
  16. Check Brown wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "F" and CRUISE fuse (10-amp) located in instrument panel fuse block for open circuit or high resistance. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair Brown wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step  30 .
  17. Check Dark Blue wire between cruise control harness connector terminal "B" and cruise control functional switches harness connector for open or high resistance. Repair Dark Blue wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step  30 .
  18. Check Gray/Black wire between cruise control harness connector terminal "C" and cruise control functional switches harness connector for open or high resistance. Repair Gray/Black wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step  30 .
  19. Check Brown/White wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "D" and clutch pedal position switch harness connector terminal "D" for high resistance or open circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair Brown/White wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step  25 .
  20. Check Brown/White wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "D" and clutch pedal position switch harness connector terminal "D" for short to voltage. Repair Brown/White wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step  25 .
