Alternator & Regulator: Description
Prizm is equipped with either a Delco 70 amp alternator with internal regulator or a Nippondenso 70 amp alternator with internal regulator. Delco alternator is a non-serviceable type and must be replaced as a unit. Nippondenso alternator is serviceable and can be repaired or overhauled.
Both alternators use an internal voltage regulator. The Integrated Circuit (IC) regulator is a solid state unit mounted inside alternator to rear end frame. Voltage regulator voltage cannot be adjusted.
Two brushes carry current through 2 slip rings to field coil mounted on rotor. Stator windings are assembled inside a laminated core forming part of alternator drive and frame assemblies. A rectifier bridge containing 6 diodes (8 diodes in Nippondenso unit) is connected to stator windings.
