SERVICE INFORMATION

Many of the Pilot PDI procedures are the same as for any Honda vehicle, but some features need special attention. This service bulletin outlines the PDI procedures for those features as well as some new model information. If the vehicle is equipped with a Navigation System, refer to Service Bulletin 99-070, ODYSSEY AND PILOT: PDI OF THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM .

This bulletin includes these PDI procedures:

This bulletin provides this new model information:

WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION

None; the information in this service bulletin is part of the Pre-Delivery Inspection.

PDI PROCEDURES

INSTALL FUSES

To prevent battery drain during vehicle shipment, the BACKUP-ACC fuse (40A) and the RADIO fuse (20A) are removed from the under-hood fuse/relay box and stored in the coin tray (ashtray). Reinstall the fuses in the under-hood fuse/relay box. See Fig 1.

Fig 1: Fuse Locations
G00198273
NOTE: Do not drive the vehicle until you install the BACKUP-ACC fuse; the taillights do not work without it.

EX ONLY: ENTER AUDIO SYSTEM AND NAVIGATION SYSTEM ANTI-THEFT CODES

On EX models, enter the anti-theft codes for the audio system and the Navigation system (if equipped). The LX audio system does not use an anti-theft code. The anti-theft codes are located in a small bag in the glove box. Also, attach the anti-theft code stickers for the audio system and the Navigation system (if equipped) onto the appropriate cards, and attach the sticker with the serial number for the audio system and the Navigation System onto the side of the glove box as shown. If all three stickers for the Navigation System have both the serial number and the anti-theft code on them, cut the anti-theft code off of one of the stickers, and then attach only the serial number part of that sticker on the side of the glove box. See Fig 2.

SET THE CLOCK

  1. LX: Press and hold the CLOCK button. EX: Press and hold the SET button until the display blinks.
  2. Press and hold the H button until the hour advances to the desired time.
  3. Press and hold the M button until the minutes advance to the desired time.
  4. EX: Press the SET button again.

INSTALL THE CARGO NET

On EX models, install the cargo net located behind the third row of seats.

INSTALL THE FLOOR MATS

Floor mats are standard equipment and are included in the PDI plastic bag in the rear of the vehicle. Install them in the appropriate locations.

INSTALL BODY PLUGS

Four body plugs are included in the PDI pack in the glove box. Install the body plugs in the tie-down holes (two per side). See Fig 3.

INSTALL THE SHIFT LOCK RELEASE COVER

The shift lock release is on top of the steering column cover. For vehicle operation during shipment, the shift lock release cover is removed and stored in a small bag in the glove box. Remove the cover from the bag, and install it. See Fig 4.

NOTE: If customers need to operate the shift lock release, they must remove the cover.

REMOVE THE TAGS FROM THE FRONT SEATS

  1. Remove the headrest by inserting your fingers under the headrest and into the holes in the upholstery for the support rods. Push on the release buttons to get the headrest to pop up. Remove the headrest. See Fig 5.

  2. Cut the string and carefully remove it from the seat.
  3. Reinstall the headrest.

PERFORM THE IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE

The idle learn procedure must be done at PDI after the fuses are installed so that the PCM can learn the engine idle speed characteristics. If it is not done or done incorrectly, the engine may have an erratic idle. This procedure also must be done whenever you do any of the following:

  • Disconnect the battery
  • Disconnect the PCM
  • Reset or replace the PCM
  • Remove the driver's or passenger's under-dash fuse/relay box
  • Remove the BATTERY (120A) fuse from the under-hood fuse/relay box
  • Remove the BACK-UP, ACC (40A) fuse from the under-hood fuse/relay box
  • Remove the No. 13 CLOCK, BACK-UP (15A) fuse from the passenger's under-dash fuse/relay box
  • Remove the PGM-FI main relay
  • Disconnect the starter cable terminal from the under-hood fuse/relay box
  • Disconnect the connectors between the engine wire harness and the left engine compartment wire harness
  • Disconnect the connectors between dashboard wire harness A and dashboard wire harness B
  • Disconnect ground terminal G1, G2, G101, or G102
NOTE: Clearing DTCs with the HDS does not require you to do the idle learn procedure.
  1. Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio, rear window defogger, lights, etc.) are off.
  2. Start the engine, and let it reach normal operating temperature (the cooling fans cycle twice).
  3. Let the engine idle with the throttle closed and all electrical items off for 10 minutes.

SET UP THE REAR ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM

The EX-L trim level is available with a rear entertainment system. Refer to the owner's manual for detailed information on operating the system.

Remove the remote control, the remote control holder (pouch), both sets of wireless headphones, and the batteries from the plastic bag stored in the storage compartment behind the third row of seats. Install the batteries in the remote control and the headphones. See Fig 6.

Fig 6: Remote Control & Headphones
G00198278

There are various types of DVDs available. Some of them are not compatible with the system. Only DVDs with the following marks will work in this system. They should also bear the area designation of "1" or "ALL." See Fig 7.

Fig 7: DVD Marks & Area Designations
G00198279

If a DVD is available, turn the ignition switch to ACCESSORY (I) or ON (II), then insert the DVD into the DVD player. Release the screen by pressing the release button, then lower the screen to the detent. Turn on the wireless headphones by pressing the red button on the earpiece, and adjust the volume with the wheel on the same earpiece.

NOTE: The headsets will not turn on if the batteries are installed incorrectly.

While the DVD is playing, test the functions with the remote control and make sure both wireless headphones work properly. The wireless headphones work in the rear seats only, not in the front seats or outside the vehicle.

When you are finished, remove the DVD from the DVD player, and store the remote control in the pouch. Store the remote control and both headphones in the front seat-back pockets.

Additional wireless headphones can be ordered from the parts department:

SET THE TIRE PRESSURE

To prevent flat spots during shipping and storage, the tires are inflated to 40 to 50 psi. To avoid customer complaints of harsh ride quality, adjust the tires to the correct pressure. The tire pressure specification is on the driver's doorjamb label.

INSTALL THE FRONT LICENSE PLATE HOLDER

The front license plate holder is installed as shown. See Fig 8.

NEW MODEL INFORMATION

SEAT HEATERS

The EX model with leather interior has front seat heaters. Because of the OPDS, the front passenger's seat has a heater only in the seat bottom, not in the seat-back.

HEATED OUTSIDE MIRRORS

The EX model with leather interior has heaters in both outside rearview mirrors. The heater switch is next to the power mirror adjustment switch on the driver's armrest.

SECOND ROW SEATS MOVEMENT

Each second row seat passenger can now adjust the seat back and forth by pulling up the lever under the seat bottom.

To provide easier third row seat access, the second row seat now moves forward about 4 inches farther than in 2003.

PARKING BRAKE CHIME

If the parking brake is set when the shift lever is moved to D, a chime sounds to remind the driver to release the parking brake. This is in addition to the normal parking brake indicator in the instrument panel.

REAR DIFFERENTIAL BREATHER

For '04, the breather for the VTM-4 rear differential has been raised above the top of the rear tire and routed into a breather box to prevent water intrusion when the vehicle is backed down a boat launching ramp.
