SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN - FIT SRS UNIT REPROGRAMMING

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN

Reference Number(s): 07-011, Date of Issue:  February 09, 2007
HONDA: 2007 Fit
CATEGORY: Restraint Seat Belt
APPLIES TO: 2007 Fit - From VIN JHMGD3...7S000001 thru JHMGD3...7S029966

BACKGROUND

Last year, the 2007 Fit received a top rating of five stars in frontal-impact crash testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, testing done later by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that front airbag deployment could occur a fraction of a second earlier than normal under certain conditions. To enhance front airbag performance, Honda is conducting a safety improvement campaign involving the reprogramming of SRS control units.

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

All owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this campaign. An example of the customer notification is at the end of this service bulletin.

To verify vehicle eligibility, check for at least one of these items:

In addition to these verification items, check for a punch mark above the first character of the engine compartment VIN. A punch mark in that location means this campaign has already been completed.

Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new vehicle inventory. These vehicles must be repaired before they are sold or leased.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Install the SRS software CD-ROM into an N workstation computer (a one-time operation), then reprogram the SRS unit. The tool used to reprogram 2007 Fit SRS units is the Fit SRS Cable Kit.

When connected to the vehicle's DLC (data link connector), the Fit SRS Cable Kit scans the SRS unit software and reprograms it by changing the calibration for front airbag deployment.

To reprogram a Fit SRS unit, you need the Fit SRS Cable Kit, the vehicle you're working on, and an N workstation computer.

  • For questions about loading the SRS software CD-ROM or using the Fit SRS Cable Kit, call American Honda Special Tools at (800) 346-6327  .

LOADING THE SRS SOFTWARE CD

NOTE:
  • Before reprogramming 2007 Fit SRS units, the SRS software CD-ROM must be installed on your N workstation computer. It cannot be installed on your dealership's master computer and downloaded to the N workstation computer. Software installation is needed only once.
  • Make sure the display properties of the N computer are not set to the color black. If they are, you will not be able to see or follow the entire reprogramming sequence.
  • Use an N computer that can be placed close to the vehicle needing SRS unit reprogramming.
  • For successful reprogramming, the N computer's operating system must be Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
  1. Close any programs currently running on the N computer.
  2. Insert the SRS software CD-ROM into the computer's CD-ROM drive.
  3. At the lower left corner of the screen, click on Start  .
  4. From the Start  menu, click on Run  .
  5. From the Run  menu, click on Browse  .
  6. From the Browse  menu, click on Setup.exe  , then click on OK  and click on Finish  .
  7. At the Fit Recalibrate installation successful  screen, click on OK  .
NOTE: Close the Start Menu  screen if it appears over the Fit Recalibrate installation successful  screen.
  8. At the FTDI CDM Drivers have been successfully installed  screen, click on OK  .
  9. Once the software is loaded, remove the CD-ROM, store it in a safe place, then go to REPAIR PROCEDURE .

REPAIR PROCEDURE

NOTE:
  • Before you begin, read this entire procedure.
  • Make sure the battery is fully charged (13.6 volts). If the battery voltage drops below 10.0 volts or rises above 14.0 volts, the SRS unit reprogramming may fail.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and watch the SRS indicator. The indicator should go off after 7 seconds to let you know there are no SRS DTCs. If the indicator does not go off, use the HDS to retrieve and clear the DTC(s). The SRS unit cannot be reprogrammed if there are any SRS DTCs.
  2. Position the N computer as close as possible to the driver's seat of the vehicle.
  3. Attach the cables to the converter box:
    • Connect the small end of the DLC cable to the box.
    • Connect the square end of the USB cable to the box.
  4. Connect the other end of the USB cable to the USB port on the iN computer.
  5. At the lower left corner of the computer screen, click on Start  .
  6. From the Start  menu, select Programs  , and then select Fit _Recalibrate  .
  7. Input your dealership name, your name, and the VIN. With the specific VIN, the system can tell whether or not the SRS unit needs reprogramming.
  8. Make sure the output file reads C/Fit_Recalibrate/LogFile.out  , then click on OK  .
  9. When the screen changes, make sure it says VIN APPROVED  , then select Reprogram SRS  . If the screen does not say VIN APPROVED  , recheck to make sure you input the correct VIN.
  10. With the ignition switch in LOCK (0), connect the large end of the DLC cable to the vehicle's DLC (data link connector) under the dashboard.
  11. When the Connect Tool to Vehicle and Turn Key to IGN ON  box appears, turn the ignition switch to ON (II) and click on OK  .
  12. When the message Vehicle Needs to be Updated  appears, click on OK  . If the message Vehicle Does Not Need to be Updated  appears, the update was already completed. If this is the case, go to step  15.
NOTE: If a communication error occurs, you may need to reconfigure the COM port. Go to COM PORT RECONFIGURATION .
  13. When the Recalibrations Completed  message appears, click on OK  .
  14. Click on the Quit  button to exit the program. Disconnect the cable from the DLC.
  15. To complete the procedure, center-punch a completion mark above the first character of the engine compartment VIN.

February 9, 2007

Dear Service Manager:

Honda Motor Co., Ltd, Inc. is announcing a safety improvement campaign affecting certain 2007 Fits.

Repair Strategy

The repair is to reprogram Fit SRS units with an N workstation computer and a new tool called the Fit SRS Cable Kit. For SRS cable software installation, SRS unit reprogramming, warranty, and affected VIN information, refer to Service Bulletin, 07-011, Safety Improvement Campaign: Fit SRS Unit Reprogramming  .

The SRS units of affected Fits in your inventory must also be reprogrammed.

Before you reprogram an SRS unit, make sure the work hasn't already been done by doing a VIN status inquiry or by checking for a punch mark above the first character of the engine compartment VIN.
