Shift Cable Replacement

  1. Remove these parts:
  2. Place the shift lever in R, then insert A 6.0 mm (0.236 in) pin (A) into the positioning holes (B). Use a 6.0 mm (0.236 in) pin with no burrs.

  3. Remove the nut (C) securing the shift cable end.
  4. Unlock the retainer lock (A).

  5. Rotate the socket holder retainer (A) counterclockwise (B) until it stops, and push the retainer lock (C) into the socket holder retainer to lock the retainer.

  6. Slide the socket holder (A) away from the bracket as shown to remove the shift cable (B) from the socket holder bracket (C). Do not remove the shift cable by pulling the shift cable guide (D).

  7. Remove the air intake scoop (see step  5 ).
  8. Do the battery removal procedure (see BATTERY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION ).
  9. Remove the air cleaner (see AIR CLEANER ELEMENT INSPECTION/REPLACEMENT ).
  10. Remove the intake air duct (see step  10 ).
  11. Remove the main under-hood fuse box (see step  11 ).
  12. Remove the battery base (see step  12 ).
  13. Remove the spring clip (A) and the control pin (B), then separate the shift cable end (C) from the selector control lever (D).

  14. Remove the nuts securing the shift cable bracket (E).
  15. Raise the vehicle on a lift, or apply parking brake, block both rear wheels, and raise the front of the vehicle. Make sure it is securely supported.
  16. Remove the bolt securing the shift cable bracket (A).

  17. Remove the shift cable grommet (B), and pull out the shift cable (C).
  18. Inserts new shift cable through the grommet hole (D), and install the grommet in its hole. Do not bend the shift cable excessively.
  19. Install the shift cable bracket.
  20. Install the shift cable bracket (A) with the nuts.

  21. Attach the shift cable end (B) to the selector control lever (C), then insert the control pin (D) into the selector control lever hole through the shift cable end, and secure the control pin with the spring clip (E).
  22. Install the battery base (see step  70 ).
  23. Install the main under-hood fuse box (see step  71 ).
  24. Install the intake air duct (see step  72 ).
  25. Install the air cleaner (see AIR CLEANER ELEMENT INSPECTION/REPLACEMENT ).
  26. Do the battery installation procedure (see BATTERY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION ).
  27. Install the air intake scoop (see step  77 ).
  28. Align the shift cable slot (A) between the socket holder (B) and the socket holder retainer (C) with the opening (D) in the shift cable bracket (E), then slide the holder into the bracket while installing the shift cable end (F) over the mounting stud (G) by aligning its square hole (H) with the square fitting (I) at the bottom of the stud. Do not install the shift cable by holding the shift cable guide (J).
    NOTE: When the socket holder is installed in the shift cable bracket, the retainer lock is unhinged and releases the holder retainer lock, then the holder retainer returns under spring force to secure the shift cable.

  29. Push the retainer lock (A) fully to lock the socket holder retainer (B), and make sure that the retainer lock fits into the hinged-joint (C). If the retainer lock does not fit with the edge of the hinged-joint, rotate the holder retainer counterclockwise while pushing the retainer lock until it locks.

  30. Make sure the shift cable end (A) is properly installed on the mounting stud (B).
    • If the shift cable end is out of position with the mounting stud, remove the shift cable from the shift cable bracket, then reinstall the cable end over the mounting stud before reinstalling the shift cable to the shift cable bracket. Do not install the shift cable end on the mounting stud with the shift cable install on the shift cable bracket.
    • If the cable end does not ride at the bottom of the mounting stud, rotate the stud to align the square fitting with the hole.

  31. Install and tighten the nut (A) on the shift cable end.

  32. Remove the 6.0 mm (0.236 in) pin (B) that was installed to hold the shift lever.
  33. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). Move the shift lever to each position, and check that the A/T gear position indicator follows the transmission range switch.
  34. Shift the shift lever to P, and check that the shift lock works properly. Push the shift lock release, and check that the shift lever releases. Also check that the shift lever locks when it is shifted back to P.
  35. Install these parts:
