Combination Switch Control Unit Input Test

NOTE: Before troubleshooting the wiper/washer system, troubleshoot B-CAN System Diagnosis Test Mode A (see TROUBLESHOOTING - B-CAN SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS TEST MODE A ).
  1. Remove the steering column covers (see REMOVAL ).
  2. Disconnect the 12P connector (A) from the combination switch (B).

  3. Inspect the connector and socket terminals to be sure they are all making good contact.
    • If the terminals are bent, loose or corroded, repair them as necessary, and recheck the system.
    • If the terminals look OK, Go to step 4.
  4. With the connector still disconnected, do these input tests at the following connector.
    • If any test indicates a problem, find and correct the cause, then recheck the system.
    • If all the input tests prove OK, Go to step 5.
      WIRE TEST CONDITION REFERENCE CHART

Cavity Wire Test condition Test: Desired result Possible cause if desired result is not obtained
3 LT GRN In all ignition switch positions Check for continuity between terminal No. 3 and under-dash fuse/relay box connector X (39P) terminal No. 27: There should be continuity. An open or high resistance in the wire
Disconnect the under-dash fuse/relay box connector X (39P) Check for continuity between terminal No. 3 and body ground: There should be no continuity. A short to ground in the wire
  5. Reconnect the 12P connector to the combination switch, turn the ignition switch to ON (II) and do the following input tests:
    • If any test indicates a problem, find and correct the cause, then recheck the system.
    • If all the input tests prove OK, replace the combination switch control unit (see Combination Switch Replacement ).
      WIRE TEST CONDITION REFERENCE CHART

Cavity Wire Test condition Test: Desired result Possible cause if desired result is not obtained
12 BLK In all ignition switch positions Measure the voltage to ground: There should be less than 0.2 V.
      • Poor ground (G401)
      • Faulty under-dash fuse/relay box
      • An open or high resistance in the ground wire
7 WHT/RED Under all conditions Measure the voltage to ground: There should be battery voltage.
      • Blown No. 15 (40 A) fuse in the under-hood fuse/relay box
      • Blown No. 7 (7.5 A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box
      • An open or high resistance in the wire
1 YEL Ignition switch ON (ID Measure the voltage to ground: There should be battery voltage.
      • Blown No. 21 (7.5 A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box
      • An open or high resistance in the wire
11 GRN/WHT Wiper switch on low and high Measure the voltage to ground: There should be less than 0.2 V.
      • Faulty combination control unit
      • Poor ground (G401) or an open in the ground wire
Wiper switch OFF Measure the voltage to ground: There should be atleast 5 V. An open or high resistance in the wire
