DTC P04C9: Fuel Fill Door Opener Malfunction

A cumulative fuel amount that has been injected since the last refueling should not exceed the fuel tank capacity in general as long as the fuel fill door system is fully functional since a cumulative amount of injected fuel that is monitored by the powertrain control module (PCM) is reset at the time of each refueling. When the PCM is unable to detect refueling, the cumulative amount of injected fuel monitored by the PCM eventually exceeds the fuel tank capacity because either of the following reasons: refueling was made without the fuel fill door switch being pressed or refueling was not detected by the PCM even the switch was being pressed. When this occurs, the PCM detects a malfunction of the fuel fill door system and stores a DTC.

Malfunction Threshold

When the cumulative fuel injection amount until the next refueling has exceeded the fuel tank capacity.

Fuel fill door opener solenoid OFF failure
Fuel fill door opener solenoid ON failure
Fuel fill door opener solenoid power supply line open
PCM internal circuit failure

Confirmation Procedure

Operating Condition

Fill the fuel tank and perform normal running.
Refuel when the gasoline level is 25 % and perform normal running.

Detect malfunction by the next refueling.
Drive the vehicle in this manner only if the traffic regulations and ambient conditions allow.

Diagnosis Details

Conditions for setting the DTC

When a malfunction is detected, the MIL comes on and a Pending DTC, a Confirmed DTC, and the freeze data are stored in the PCM memory.

Conditions for clearing the DTC

The MIL is cleared if the malfunction does not return in three consecutive trips in which the diagnostic runs. The MIL, the Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, and the freeze data can be cleared with the scan tool Clear command or by disconnecting the battery.
