The mass air flow (MAF) sensor directly measures the amount of intake air flow into the engine, and the powertrain control module (PCM) controls the fuel injection based on the measured value. The PCM calculates the estimated mass air flow amount based on the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor value. The MAF sensor value is compared with the estimated mass air flow amount. If the difference between the measured MAF sensor value and the estimated mass air flow value is large, the PCM detects a malfunction and stores a DTC.
