Ignition Timing

  1. Ensure vehicle is at normal operating temperature, all accessories are off and transmission is in Park or Neutral. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position and curb idle speed is set to specification. See IDLE SPEED  .
  2. Ground ignition timing adjustment connector. See IGNITION TIMING ADJUSTMENT CONNECTOR LOCATION table. Check ignition basic timing. See IGNITION TIMING table. Disconnect ground wire on ignition timing adjustment connector. Check ignition actual timing.
  3. If timing is incorrect, loosen Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor hold-down nut. Ignition timing will advance if CKP sensor is turned clockwise and retard if turned counterclockwise. After adjustment, tighten hold-down nut. Ensure CKP sensor does not move when tightening hold-down nut.

Application Base Timing
Elantra (1) 4-14 @ 700-900
(1) With ignition timing adjustment connector grounded. DO NOT  adjust timing with scan tool connected to DLC.
