Generator Output Test

NOTE: If battery is fully charged, turn headlights on to partially discharge battery.
  1. Turn ignition, headlights and all electrical loads off. Ensure generator belt tension is correct. Connect an inductive-type DC test ammeter with a 0-100 amp range to generator terminal "B" output wire. See Fig 1 .
  2. Connect voltmeter positive lead to terminal "B" at generator, and negative lead to ground. Ensure ammeter and voltmeter leads are clear of all moving components. Connect a tachometer or scan tool. Leave hood open.
  3. If voltmeter indicates battery voltage, go to next step. If voltmeter indicates zero volts, check for open wire between positive battery terminal and generator terminal "B", blown fusible link, or poor ground. Repair as necessary.
  4. NOTE: After engine start, charging current decreases quickly. Operation must be performed quickly to read maximum current value correctly.
  5. Start engine and turn headlights on. Turn headlights to high beam, and blower motor to high speed. Quickly increase engine speed to 2500 RPM, and observe maximum current readout on ammeter. Ammeter reading should not be less than minimum output amperage. See GENERATOR OUTPUT SPECIFICATIONS  table. If generator output is not as specified, remove and bench test generator.
GENERATOR OUTPUT SPECIFICATIONS

Application (1) Minimum Output - Amps (2) Rated Output - Amps
Santa Fe 63 95
(1) Generator nominal output current value is shown on a nameplate attached to generator body. Output current values change with electrical load and generator temperature. Therefore, nominal output current value may not be obtained. If this occurs, keep headlights on and blower motor on high speed to increase electrical load and discharge battery. If generator temperature or ambient air temperature is too high, reduce generator temperature before testing again.
(2) Amperage at 13.5 volts rated output.
