Hydraulic System Pressure Test

  1. With engine off, disconnect pressure hose from pump. Install Power Steering Tester (J-29877-A ) and Adapter (J-33996 ) in hose between power steering pump and steering unit. Gauge must be between shutoff valve and pump. See Fig 1 . Check fluid level.

  2. Bleed system by holding gauge and hose lower than fluid reservoir with shutoff valve open. Add fluid if needed. Start engine and allow to idle for at least 2 minutes. Check fluid level in reservoir and refill if needed.
CAUTION: DO NOT  hold steering wheel at lock position more than 5 seconds. Internal pump damage will result.
  3. If after bleeding system, steering still malfunctions, start engine. Turn steering wheel from lock-to-lock several times until fluid has reached a temperature of 122-140°F (50-60°C). Ensure pressure gauge shutoff valve is open. Have another technician hold steering wheel at lock position for less than 5 seconds.
CAUTION: DO NOT  close shutoff valve for more than 5 seconds. Severe pump damage will result.
  4. Record pressure reading. If fluid pressure is greater than specified, pump is defective. Refer to the POWER STEERING PRESSURE SPECIFICATIONS  table. If fluid pressure is less than specified, return front wheels to straight-ahead position. Increase and hold engine speed at 1500 RPM. Close pressure gauge shutoff valve.
  5. Check and record pressure gauge reading. If pressure reading is within specification, problem is with steering gear box. If reading is less than specified, problem is with pump.
