Bleeding Brake System
CAUTION:
DO NOT allow brake fluid to contact painted surfaces or electrical connectors. Brake fluid spills must be cleaned up immediately because brake fluid will loosen and lift paint from vehicle.
NOTE:
Use only clean brake fluid meeting SAE J1703-F and DOT 3 standards from a sealed container. Bleeding ABS brakes requires conventional bleeding of hydraulic system and then use of scan tool to cycle and bleed HCU pump and solenoids. A second bleeding of hydraulic system is then required to remove any remaining air from system.
- If a new master cylinder is to be installed, bench bleed master cylinder before installing it in vehicle. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM in the BRAKE SYSTEM article.
- Clean master cylinder reservoir cover and surrounding area. Ensure reservoir is full. Position shop towels under master cylinder and combination valve. Bleed master cylinder and combination valve at brakeline fittings. Depress brake pedal slowly through full travel. Close brakeline fitting, release pedal. When air is removed, tighten brakelines to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
.NOTE: DO NOT pump brake pedal while bleeding brakes. Pumping brake pedal compresses air into tiny bubbles throughout system making bleeding more difficult.
- After bleeding master cylinder, install bleed hose to right rear bleeder valve. Submerge other end of hose in clean glass jar partially filled with clean brake fluid. Depress brake pedal slowly to floorpan.
- Open bleeder valve 1/2 to 3/4 turn. Depress brake pedal slowly through full travel. Close bleeder valve, and release pedal. Repeat procedure until flow of fluid shows no signs of air bubbles. Repeat bleeding operation in order continuing at left rear, right front and then left front wheels. Refill master cylinder reservoir as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to ABS diagnostic connector. See PRE-DIAGNOSTIC INSPECTION under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING for location of ABS diagnostic connector. To bleed HCU, select CHASSIS SYSTEM, followed by TEVES ABS BRAKES, then BLEED BRAKES. When scan tool displays TEST COMPLETE, disconnect scan tool and repeat steps 3) and 4). Top off master cylinder reservoir and verify proper system operation.
