Shift Interlock Systems
Shift interlock system consists of a shift interlock solenoid (located on steering column), brakelight switch and PCM/TCM sense circuits. With ignition switch in RUN or START position, shift interlock solenoid is energized, locking gearshift lever in Park. When brake pedal is depressed, circuit is interrupted to de-energize shift interlock solenoid, allowing gearshift lever movement from Park.
If shift interlock system does not operate as specified, use appropriate wiring diagram to diagnose system. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . On Cherokee, also check park lock cable adjustment. See PARK LOCK CABLE (AW-4) under ADJUSTMENTS.
