Road Test

NOTE: Perform road test to determine if problem is related to a mechanical or electrical component.
  1. With ignition off, disconnect 32-pin electrical connector from Transmission Control Module (TCM). The TCM is located behind right side of instrument panel. See Fig 1 .

  2. Road test vehicle. Shift transmission into each gear. Transmission should operate as listed.
    • Lock When In Park
    • Back-Up When In Reverse
    • Vehicle Should Not Move In Neutral
    • Provide 1st Gear Only With Shift Lever In "1-2" Position
    • Operate In 3rd Gear Only With Shift Lever In "3" Position
    • Operate In 4th Gear (Overdrive Gear) In "D" Position
  3. If transmission operates properly, proceed to step 5). If forward gears were difficult to distinguish (all feel the same), or vehicle would not back-up, see TROUBLE SHOOTING  . DO NOT  perform torque converter stall speed test or time lag test.
  4. Continue road test. Manually downshift transmission from "D" to "3" and from "3" to "1-2" position. Manually upshift transmission through forward gears again.
CAUTION: DO NOT  overspeed engine when performing downshifts. Release throttle and allow vehicle to slow down before downshifting.
  5. If transmission operates properly, perform torque converter stall speed test, time lag test and hydraulic pressure test. If problem still exists, check electronic control system for stored diagnostic trouble codes. See the AUTO TRANS DIAGNOSIS - AW-4 article in the AUTO TRANS DIAGNOSIS section. Once road test is completed, connect electrical connector on TCM.
NOTE: For transmission gear component application, refer to CLUTCH, BRAKE & BAND APPLICATION  and VALVE BODY SOLENOID APPLICATION  .
