Brake Indicator Not Operating Properly
- Ensure parking brake is released and brake fluid level is at proper level. Using scan tool, select CHASSIS and read DTCs. If BRAKE FLUID LEVEL SWITCH CIRCUIT DTC is present, repair as necessary. Using scan tool, select BODY and read DTCs. Ensure DTCs BRAKE LAMP OPEN and BRAKE LAMP CKT SHORT are not present before proceeding. If BRAKE LAMP OPEN is present, go to BRAKE LIGHT OPEN . If BRAKE LAMP CKT SHORT is present, go to BRAKE LIGHT CIRCUIT SHORT . Turn ignition off. Turn ignition on. If Red brake warning light never comes on (with no ABS lamp), go to next step. If Red brake warning light comes on and never turns off (with no ABS lamp), go to step 3 . If Red brake warning light illuminates for about 4 seconds and then goes out, go to step 5 .
- Turn ignition off. Access rear of Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) and replace Red brake bulb with a known-good bulb. Cycle ignition from off to on position. If Red brake warning light illuminates, repair is complete. If Red brake warning light does not illuminate, replace instrument cluster printed circuit board. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS.
- Ensure parking brake is released and brake fluid is at proper level. Disconnect parking brake switch 2-pin connector. Using DVOM, measure continuity between both terminals at parking brake switch. If continuity exists, replace parking brake switch. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS. If continuity does not exist, go to next step.
- Disconnect MIC connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and MIC connector terminal No. 5 (Gray/Black wire). See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Gray/Black wire between park brake switch and MIC. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS.
- Remove parking brake switch, if necessary then actuate the switch. With switch actuated and using DVOM, measure continuity between both terminals at parking brake switch. If continuity does not exist, replace brake warning indicator switch. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS. If continuity exists, go to next step.
- Inspect park brake switch connector and terminals for obvious damage, repair as necessary. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and ground terminal at park brake switch connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in wire between park brake switch and ground. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS.
- Using DVOM, measure resistance in Gray/Black wire between park brake switch connector terminal and MIC connector terminal No. 5. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, test is complete. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Gray/Black wire between park brake switch and MIC. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS.
