Restraints System (Service Information): CLOCKSPRING: Removal: Removal

WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, Occupant Classification System (OCS), seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to follow these instructions may result in accidental airbag deployment.

NOTE:

Before starting this procedure, be certain to turn the steering wheel until the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position and be certain that the entire steering system is locked or inhibited from rotation.

  1. Place the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
  2. Disconnect and isolate the negative cable from the battery.
  3. Remove the Driver AirBag (DAB) from the steering wheel. Refer to AIR BAG, DRIVER, REMOVAL .

If clockspring centering is not maintained, the clockspring must be replaced with a new unit. Refer to CLOCKSPRING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  7. Move the steering column to the fully lowered position and leave the tilt release lever in the released (down) position.

  9. Disconnect the instrument panel wire harness connectors from the back of the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) mounting housing (1).
  10. Remove the four screws (2) that secure the clockspring to the outer circumference of the SCCM mounting housing.
  11. Carefully pull the clockspring (3) away from the SCCM mounting housing far enough to disengage the interconnect terminal pins of the clockspring from the interconnect receptacle of the SCCM mounting housing.
  12. Remove the clockspring from the steering column.
