Steering System: Column: Installation: Installation

  1. If the column was replaced, position the plastic bracket (1) and install and securely tighten the screws (2).

  2. Install the steering column with the steering column trim ring, through the steering column opening.
  3. Raise the column onto the mounting studs and install the two mounting nuts (2) on the studs and install the mounting bolts (1).
    NOTE:

    Verify that the tilt lever is in the unlocked position prior to tightening the steering column fasteners.

  4. Install two column mounting bolts (1). Tighten all 4 column fasteners to 24 N.m (18 ft. lbs.).

    NOTE:

    A new pinch bolt (3) must be installed every time the pinch bolt is removed.

  5. Verify the front wheels of vehicle are in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position.
  6. Slide the intermediate shaft (1) onto the steering gear pinion shaft (2).
  7. Install a NEW  pinch bolt (3) and tighten the bolt to 30 N.m (22 ft. lbs.).
  8. Confirm that:
    1. The front wheels are in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position.
    2. The turn signal stalk is in the NEUTRAL position.
  9. Connect wiring harness connectors at the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM).
  10. Connect any other wiring harness connectors at the steering column components.
  11. Install knee blocker air bag, if equipped. Refer to AIR BAG, KNEE BLOCKER, INSTALLATION .
  12. Install the driver air bag. Refer to AIR BAG, DRIVER, INSTALLATION .
  13. Install the screws to the steering column trim ring.
  14. Install the steering column opening cover. Refer to COVER, STEERING COLUMN OPENING, INSTALLATION .

  15. Install the upper and lower (2) shrouds on the steering column. Refer to SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, LOWER, INSTALLATION  and SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, UPPER, INSTALLATION .
    WARNING:

    Do not connect the battery ground cable without following the proper procedure as indicated in the following step. Personal injury or death may result if the Airbag System Test is not performed first.

  16. Reconnect the battery ground terminal following the air bag system test found in restraints. Refer to DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING .
  17. Perform Vehicle Trim Procedure. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  18. Test the operation of all column mounted components.
  19. Road test the vehicle to ensure proper operation of the steering system.
