Section 41 (Rear Driveline Module): Removal
Never grasp half shaft assembly by the boots. This may cause the boot to pucker or crease and reduce the service life of the boot.
Avoid over angulating or stroking the C/V joints when handling the half shaft.
Half shafts exposed to battery acid, transmission fluid, brake fluid, differential fluid or gasoline may cause the boots to deteriorate. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage.
Propeller shaft installation is a two-person operation. Never allow propeller shaft to hang from the center bearing, or while only connected to the transmission or rear axle flanges. A helper is required. If a propeller shaft section is hung unsupported, damage may occur to the shaft, coupler, and center bearing from over-angulation. This may result in driveline vibrations or component failure.
One speed shown two speed similar.
- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Remove the muffler. Refer to MUFFLER, EXHAUST, REMOVAL
.
- Disconnect the pressure sensor wire harness connector (1).
- Disconnect the pump motor wire harness connector (2).
- Disconnect the vent hose.CAUTION:
Do not allow the propeller shaft to hang from the vehicle unsupported. Damage may occur to the joint, boot, and center bearing from over-angulation.
- Apply alignment index marks (3) to the rear propeller shaft flange and the rear pinion flange.
- Remove and discard the rear propeller shaft bolts (1).
- Separate the rear propeller shaft from the rear pinion flange and secure the shaft to the side.
- Remove the Right Hand (RH) halfshaft hub nut (1).NOTE:
Apply alignment index marks to the halfshaft and knuckle for use during installation.
- Remove the Left Hand (LH) rear knuckle. Refer to KNUCKLE, REAR, REMOVAL
.
- Remove the LH halfshaft (1) from the Rear Drive Unit (RDU).NOTE:
It may be necessary to hold the stub shafts in place when removing the halfshaft.
NOTE:Tag the halfshaft shims for location.
- Support the RDU (1) with a suitable jack and secure it with chains.NOTE:
The rear sway bar (2) may need to be repositioned out of the way to remove RDU isolator through bolt (1).
- Remove the rear RDU isolator through bolt (1).
- Loosen the front RDU bracket to isolator through bolts (1) enough to allow the RDU bracket to move forward.
- Remove the four RDU bracket to RDU bolts (2).
- Position the RDU bracket as far forward as possible.
- Disconnect the vent hose (1).
- Lower the RDU with the RH halfshaft attached to the RDU.NOTE:
The RH halfshaft may need to be tapped out with a suitable tool from the RH rear knuckle.
NOTE:Remove the RH halfshaft
- Remove the RDU from the vehicle.
