Cover(S), Engine Timing: Installation

  1. If removed, install the coolant outlet housing (1) to the timing cover with a new gasket using only the four bolts (2) shown tightened to 12 N.m (106 in. lbs.).
  2. If removed, install the water pump (3) to the timing cover using only the four bolts (4) shown tightened to 12 N.m (106 in. lbs.). Refer to PUMP, WATER, INSTALLATION .

  3. Install the coolant outlet housing gasket (1) and the water pump gasket (2).

  4. After all residual sealant (2) has been removed, clean the oil pan and block mating surfaces with isopropyl alcohol in preparation for sealant application, then remove the shop towel (1) prior to timing cover installation. Refer to ENGINE GASKET SURFACE PREPARATION  .
    CAUTION:

    Engine assembly requires the use of a unique sealant that is compatible with engine oil. Using a sealant other than Mopar® Threebond Engine RTV Sealant may result in engine fluid leakage.

    CAUTION:

    Following the application of Mopar® Threebond Engine RTV Sealant to the gasket surfaces, the components must be assembled within 10 minutes and the attaching fasteners must be tightened to specification within 45 minutes. Prolonged exposure to the air prior to assembly may result in engine fluid leakage.

  5. Clean the engine timing cover, cylinder head, and block mating surfaces with isopropyl alcohol in preparation for sealant application. Refer to ENGINE GASKET SURFACE PREPARATION  .
  6. Apply a 2 to 3 mm wide bead of Mopar® Threebond Engine RTV Sealant to the front cover as shown in the following locations:
    • Three cylinder head bosses (1)
    • Right and left flanges (2)
    • Four cylinder head to engine block T-joints (3)
    • Cover to right cam chain tensioner gap (4)

  7. Apply a 2 to 3 mm wide bead of Mopar® Threebond Engine RTV Sealant to the front of the oil pan (2) and T-joints (1) as shown.

  8. Keeping the timing cover in a vertical position with a slight outward tip at the top of the timing cover, load the timing cover at the bottom, along the oil pan and rock the top of the timing cover into place, being extremely careful not to wipe or disturb the Mopar® Threebond Engine RTV Sealant pattern.
  9. Align the locator pins (4) on the engine block to the engine timing cover.
  10. Install and tighten the timing cover attaching bolts:
    • Twenty-two M6 bolts (3) to 12 N.m (106 in. lbs.).
    • Two M8 bolts (2) to 25 N.m (18 ft. lbs.).
    • Three M10 bolts (1) to 55 N.m (41 ft. lbs.)

  11. Install the five oil pan to timing cover bolts (1) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  12. Install the right and left cylinder head covers and upper intake manifold. Refer to COVER(S), CYLINDER HEAD, INSTALLATION  .
  13. Install the crankshaft vibration damper. Refer to DAMPER, VIBRATION, INSTALLATION  .
  14. Install the electric vacuum pump. Refer to PUMP, ELECTRIC VACUUM, INSTALLATION .
  15. Install the accessory idler pulley. Refer to PULLEY, IDLER, INSTALLATION, 3.6L .
  16. Install accessory drive belt tensioner. Refer to TENSIONER, BELT, INSTALLATION, 3.6L .
  17. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to BELT, SERPENTINE, INSTALLATION, 3.6L .
  18. If removed for timing cover replacement, Install the thermostat housing. Refer to THERMOSTAT, INSTALLATION, 3.6L .

  19. Install the upper radiator hose (1).

  20. Install the outlet tube to the thermostat housing and secure the clamp (3).
  21. Install the outlet tube bolt (2) to the support bracket and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  22. Install the heater core supply hose (1) to the coolant outlet housing and secure the clamp.

  23. Install the coolant bottle inlet hose (2) to the outlet hose and secure the clamp.
  24. Engage the coolant bottle inlet hose retainers (1) to the support bracket.

  25. Install the lower radiator hose (2) to the water pump housing.
  26. Install the heater core return hose (1) to the water pump housing.
  27. Install a NEW  oil filter and replace the engine oil. Refer to ENGINE OIL AND FILTER CHANGE  .
  28. Fill the cooling system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  29. Install the front skid plate. Refer to PLATE, SKID, FRONT, INSTALLATION .
  30. Install the air cleaner body. Refer to BODY, AIR CLEANER, INSTALLATION  .
  31. Connect the negative battery cable.
  32. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. Check cooling system for correct fluid level. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
