Remote Starting System
Before attempting to diagnose a problem with the remote starting system, first be sure the starter motor and starter solenoid are working properly. Any starter or solenoid problems must be repaired first.
Also be sure the engine will easily start and run with the use of the key fob. Any engine running, idling or performance concerns must be addressed first.
All of the following conditions must be met before the engine will remote start:
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor - Used to verify that the engine coolant temperature is within an acceptable range for engine operation.
- Ajar switches - Used to indicate if any vehicle access points on the vehicle or opened or closed. Outputs to the Body Control Module (BCM). Challenged by the Radio Frequency Hub (RFH).
- Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) - An added layer of security that locks the column.
- Fuel level sensor and Fuel Pump Control Module (FPCM) - Signaled by the PCM to drive the fuel pump to support engine starting if a sufficient amount of fuel is detected.
- Hazard switch - The hazard switch needs to be in the OFF position.
- Ignition state - The ignition needs to be in the OFF state.
- Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS):
- The IBS interacts with the BCM by means of the LIN bus communications. The BCM is its master node.
- The IBS is used to give information about raw battery current, voltage, and temperature levels. The battery needs to be at an acceptable charge level
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL).
- Oil Pressure sensor - Used to determine that the engine has an acceptable oil pressure range prior to starting the engine.
- Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) - Used to indicate the position of the gear shift lever.
- Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) - Used to verify the vehicle is not moving.
- Vehicle Theft Alarm (VTA) or Intrusion Detection System (IDS) - Signal sent indicating the status of the VTA or the IDS system. An active VTA or IDS state will disable the remote start function.
If all of the previous items checked OK, and the remote starting system will not operate. Refer to DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING .
