The standard starting system can consist of the following components:

COMPONENT INDEX

1. Refer to RADIO FREQUENCY HUB (RFH) MODULE .
2. Refer to KEYLESS IGNITION NODE (KIN) OR KEYLESS GO BUTTON .
3. Refer to BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) .
4. Refer to STARTER MOTOR RELAY  - Located within the Power Distribution Center (PDC).
5. Refer to POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) .
6. Refer to STARTER MOTOR .

The Battery, Starting, and Charging systems operate in conjunction with one another, and must be tested as a complete system. For correct operation of starting/charging systems, all components used in these three systems must perform within specifications. When attempting to diagnose any of these systems, it is important that you keep their interdependency in mind.

The diagnostic procedures used in each of these groups include the most basic conventional diagnostic methods, to the more sophisticated On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) built into the PCM. Use of an induction-type milliampere ammeter, volt / ohmmeter, battery charger, carbon pile rheostat (load tester), and 12-volt test lamp may be required.

OPERATION

The starter is always operated by a single relay positioned in the PDC and activated by the PCM. The activation signal reaches the BCM, which will activate an internal relay of its own, which sends a signal to the relay located in the PDC and activated by the PCM. When the PCM activates the relay, a 12 volt feed arrives at the starter solenoid, which will activate the starter.
