Rear Driveline Module (RDM): Notes

CAUTION:

Driveshaft installation is a two-person operation. Never allow driveshaft to hang from the center bearing, or while only connected to the transmission or rear axle flanges. A helper is required. If a driveshaft section is hung unsupported, damage may occur to the shaft, coupler, and center bearing from over-angulation. This may result in driveline vibrations or component failure.

REMOVAL

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  2. Remove the left rear halfshaft. Refer to REAR HALFSHAFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  3. Remove the driveshaft. Refer to REAR DRIVESHAFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  4. Remove the fuel tank heat shield.
  5. Place a support under the rear muffler.

  10. Disengage the right axle inner joint from the RDM.
  11. Remove the RDM rear isolator bolts and lower the RDM.
    CAUTION:

Boot sealing is vital to retain special lubricants and to prevent foreign contaminants from entering the CV joint. Mishandling, such as allowing the assemblies to dangle unsupported, or pulling or pushing the ends can cut boots or damage CV joints. During removal and installation procedures, always support both ends of the halfshaft to prevent damage.

  12. Lower the RDM while disengaging the left halfshaft from the RDM.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION:

Never grasp halfshaft assembly by the boots. This may cause the boot to pucker or crease and reduce the service life of the boot.

Avoid over angulating the C/V joints when handling the halfshaft.

Halfshafts exposed to battery acid, transmission fluid, brake fluid, differential fluid or gasoline may cause the boots to deteriorate. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage.

NOTE: Use care when installing the halfshaft to the axle assembly. The halfshaft installation angle should be minimized to avoid damage to the seal upon installation.
