CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK (CAN) ADAPTER FOR HI-SCAN PRO 

This bulletin provides information relating to the use of a Controller Area Network (CAN) Interface when using the Hi-Scan Pro to retrieve diagnostic information from a Kia vehicle that employs CAN communication between an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and the Hi-Scan Pro.

The CAN interface (P/N 09900-20000) is being provided to all Kia retailers as a mandatory Special Service Tool (SST). Additional CAN interfaces and other Hi-Scan Pro accessories may be ordered by calling 866-542-8665.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Download software version KP510 from the Kia Service Information System (KSIS). After reviewing the instructions included as part of the download file, install the software onto the Hi-Scan Pro Standard (green label) software card.

  2. Ensure the Hi-Scan Pro is not connected to a vehicle. Remove the Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC) cable from the Hi-Scan Pro by loosening the two (2) screws.

  3. If either of the screw/nut assemblies are damaged, replace them with P/N K00U2100ST-NUT and K00U2100ST-SCREW.

  4. Connect the CAN Interface cable to the top of the Hi-Scan Pro. Tighten the two (2) screws by hand.

  5. Connect the DLC cable to the CAN Interface. Tighten the two (2) screws by hand.

  6. Place the switch located on the front of the CAN Interface into the "AUTO" position.

  7. With the vehicle ignition in the OFF position, connect the DLC cable to the OBD-II connector of the vehicle. The red "POWER" LED on the CAN interface should illuminate.

  8. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON. Access the appropriate System Select menu using the Hi-Scan Pro keypad.

    After selecting Engine Control or Automatic Transaxle Control, press the ENTER key on the Hi-Scan Pro. The display will indicate that the CAN adapter should be connected before continuing. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and press the ENTER key on the Hi-Scan Pro.

  9. The green "COM" LED on the CAN adapter will illuminate when communication with a CAN-compatible ECU is established.

  10. Once communication is established, the required diagnostic functions may be performed.
    NOTE: The CAN Interface may remain connected to the Hi-Scan Pro. Communication with non-CAN compatible vehicles will not be affected.
