SMART KEY CODE SAVING AFTER A SUCCESSFUL SMK REPROGRAM

Following the successful reprogramming of the Smart Key Module (SMK) it is always necessary to reprogram the key fobs before the vehicle can be started or placed into Accessory or Key On status.

Until the key fobs are relearned in the Smart Key Code Saving menu found under User Option heading of PIC System, the meter set will appear dark with no warning lights on and Auto VIN recognition will not be possible. This is normal operation following a successful SMK reprogramming procedure.

Before beginning any SMK reflash, obtain the 6 digit PIN Code found in the GDS or KGIS systems by entering the VIN number in the Vehicle Info menu option and scrolling down to the PIN code button. Later model vehicles using the Smart Key system use the (New) PIN code listed. Write this 6 digit number down and keep it nearby for use after the reflash has been completed.

Place the smart key module to be relearned in to the key holder located in either the center console or to the left of the open glove box door, depending upon the model. Select PIC system, User Option and Smart Key Code saving to begin the key relearning process. Remember that the use of Auto VIN function will not be possible until the first Smart Key is relearned. Access the PIC system by selecting previous vehicle or manually entering the appropriate vehicle selection. Follow the on screen prompts and enter the 6 digit PIN code to teach all available keys. After relearn of all keys, cancel to exit Smart Key Code Saving and verify normal operation.

If the Smart Key Code Saving procedure is interrupted before completion or an error message is received during relearn, the SMK module can be recovered by disconnecting the positive and negative battery cables and touching them together or using a jumper between them for approximately 10 seconds. Reconnect the battery and with Key Off, select the Smart Key Code Saving option as described above.

NOTE: The customer should be advised to bring both keys in to the dealer whenever SMK reprogramming is necessary. If only one key is available, request that the customer come back at a later date to have both keys reprogrammed, otherwise the spare key will no longer function to start vehicle.
