Visual Check & Basic Adjustments
NOTE:
It is important that the following procedure is carried out in the sequence shown and the results recorded.
- Check that road springs are correctly seated and are to correct specification for vehicle. See FRONT article in SUSPENSION.
- Measure trim height from wheel center to wheelarch eyebrow. Record results on data sheet.
- Check/top off power steering fluid. See FLUID LEVEL CHECK under LUBRICATION.
- Check tension and condition of drive belt, see POWER STEERING PUMP DRIVE BELT . If using a belt tension gauge, the following values should be obtained: Run-in belt: 80-90 lbs (355-400 N) or New belt: 90-100 lbs (400-425 N).
- Check the phasing of the steering shaft universal joints on vehicles prior to VIN Nos. 601607. Rephase if required. See STEERING COLUMNS article in STEERING.
- Check condition of track rod, drag link and ball joints. See DRAG LINK & DRAG LINK ENDS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If either component is damaged, check operation of steering damper and steering box for smoothness. Replace all damaged or worn components that impair the operation of the steering system.
- Examine all steering and suspension bushings for signs of wear and deterioration. Also check all fixings for torque relaxation. Tighten to correct torque value. See FRONT article in SUSPENSION.
- Check front and rear axle hubs for oil leaks. Repair as necessary.
- Check brake system for leaks, pipe condition, pad wear/contamination, disc wear/condition and ABS sensors for correct fitting.
- Check movement (hub end float) in the hubs by rocking the wheels.
- Check front wheel alignment, ensuring toe out is between 0-2.0 mm. Note that for vehicles displaying a tendency to veer more than considered allowable, it is permissible to set the front track to parallel.
- Having completed all the above checks and adjustments, road test vehicle. See ROAD TEST PROCEDURE under PERFORMANCE TESTING. Attempt to reproduce symptoms. If symptoms still exist, test and repair as necessary.
