TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN

Reference Number(s): 12/07/94/US, Date of Issue:  February 11, 1994
LAND ROVER: Range Rover, Discovery, Defender
SECTION: Engine
AFFECTED VEHICLES: Range Rover Discovery, Defender - All Vehicles

DETAIL

Following customer complaints of no start in ambient temperatures of typically below -5 degrees Fahrenheit ( -20° C), the service procedure shown below should be implemented immediately for all vehicles operated in the shaded areas of the attached map. Oil viscosity and battery condition have a significant affect upon engine cranking speed particularly in cold temperatures.

5W/30 or 5W/40 engine oil and the starting procedure shown below will ensure that the best cranking speed and lubrication characteristics are achieved in extreme cold weather.

NOTE: Since the "break in" characteristics of mineral oils exceed those of synthetic, synthetic oils should not be used before the 7500 mile service.

ACTION REQUIRED

For customers who operate their vehicles in the shaded area of the attached map follow the procedure below. Advise customers of the starting procedure shown and make them aware of the instructions in the Owners Handbook which have recently been updated.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

  1. Heated Seats/screens - Battery Condition

The above accessories involves high power consumption and therefore should be used with discretion. To avoid heavy drainage of the battery, which results in reduced cranking speed, use of the above accessories is recommended only when the engine is running.

  2. Cranking Technique

Whenever possible please ensure that customers DO NOT ABORT THEIR START ATTEMPT PREMATURELY.

In extreme conditions (below -13 degrees farenheit/-25° C) the cranking period may be extended to a max of 30 seconds. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SHOULD NOT BE DEPRESSED UNTIL THE ENGINE HAS STARTED.

  3. In Extreme Conditions

    (Below -13 degrees farenheit/-25° C)

Use of a 115 volt powered block heater will significantly improve the starting capability of the engine. Please ensure that customers who operate their vehicles in extreme conditions are aware of the benefits of block heaters. These are available as an accessory, part # PRC9674
