WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Land Rover Discovery. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Discovery and Discovery II can be identified by VIN number. The 4th and 5th digits of the VIN are JY on Discovery, TY on Discovery II. This article applies to Discovery. For information on Discovery II, see ANTI-LOCK/TRACTION CONTROL - DISCOVERY II article.
CAUTION: See ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
NOTE: Vacuum brake booster may also be referenced as vacuum servo. Modulator unit may also be referenced as ABS Booster.

The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) is designed to prevent wheel lock-up during hard braking. This allows driver to maintain vehicle steering control and stability. ABS system consists of an ABS Electronic Control Unit (ECU), modulator unit, brake booster and master cylinder, front and rear wheel speed sensors and exciter rings, Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV), ABS ANTI-LOCK warning light, and a diagnostic plug connector. See Fig 1 .

NOTE: For more information on brake system, see DISC article.
