The transfer case currently active setting is obtained from information broadcast by the transfer case control module on the controller area network (CAN). The display can show low range, high range or neutral selection. The selected range icon flashes if a ratio change is in progress.

When neutral is selected, the display shows an 'N'  . If the transfer case is in neutral but the automatic transmission is not in neutral, the selected gear on the transmission flashes until neutral is selected on the selector lever.
