ISSUE

Some vehicles may exhibit one or more of the following engine or transmission symptoms:

• Harsh engagements
• Harsh or delayed shifts
• Light surging during light load, steady speed driving caused by occasional misfires (Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated for the misfire)
• Run-on feel or insufficient engine braking during decelerations
• Occasional long start times
• Occasional hesitation or stumble during acceleration from low speeds These concerns may be attributed to a calibration concern.

ACTION

Reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Refer to the following SERVICE PROCEDURE  for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Follow normal diagnosis and determine if one or more of the following conditions are present.

TRANSMISSION:

• Engagements in Drive or Reverse
  1. Harsh or delayed
  2. Inconsistent feel
  3. Repeated harsh engagement from D-R, R-D at an idle stop
• Harsh or delayed shifts
  1. Harsh backout shifts
  2. 3-2 manual downshifts long and intermittently harsh
  3. Kickdown/backout shifts through 3rd are slow
  4. Intermittent harsh converter engagements with Select Shift Transmission (SST) option only
  5. 2-1 downshift cycling at a stop with SST option only

ENGINE:

• Light surging during light load, steady speed driving caused by occasional misfires (MIL illuminated for the misfire)
• Run-on feel or insufficient engine braking during decelerations
• Occasional long start times
• Occasional hesitation or stumble during acceleration from low speeds
  1. If the concerns are present, determine if the problems are due to a component concern.
  2. If a part or parts are the cause of the concern, repair as required.
  3. Clear codes and validate the repair.
  4. If the concern returns or if parts are not the cause of the concern, the processor must be re-flashed.
  5. Using New Generation Star (NGS) Tester, Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS), or Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS), access the PCM identification function to obtain the PCM part number.
  6. Use the PCM part number to identify the vehicle's existing calibration by referring to the PCM Reprogramming Information Chart.
  7. Once the existing calibration has been identified, reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration revision level using NGS Tester, SBDS or WDS.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. See Fig 1 . Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
