Driver Air Bag Module: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Lincoln Town Car. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
    CAUTION: There are 2 different steering wheels for this vehicle, an early build and late build. These steering wheels cannot be interchanged. If installing a new steering wheel, make sure the correct steering wheel is being installed or damage to the components can occur.

  1. Identify early build or late build steering wheel.
    • An early build steering wheel will have a tower on the left hand side (shown). A late build steering wheel will have a tower on the right hand side.
      • Make sure that if a new steering wheel was installed, it was the same as the original equipment. For additional information, refer to STEERING COLUMN .
  2. CAUTION: There are 2 different driver air bag modules for this vehicle, an early build and late build. These driver air bag modules cannot be interchanged. If installing a new driver air bag module, make sure the correct module is being installed or damage to the components can occur.

  3. Identify the correct driver air bag module.
    • Looking at the connector side (rear) of the driver air bag module, an early build will have a tower on the left hand side (shown); a late build driver air bag module will have a tower on the right hand side when looking at the connector side of the driver air bag module.
  4. Connect the driver air bag module
    1. Connect the horn electrical connector.
    2. CAUTION: The clockspring electrical connectors are unique and cannot be reversed when connected to the driver air bag module. Match the electrical connector key to the keyway in the driver air bag module. Do not force the electrical connectors into the driver air bag module.
    3. Connect the driver air bag module electrical connectors as noted during removal.
    4. Install the driver air bag module electrical wiring into the driver air bag wiring clip.

  5. NOTE: With the driver air bag module held as close to the steering wheel as possible, take up the slack in the wiring by gently tucking any excess length into the pocket at the bottom of the steering wheel before rocking the driver air bag module into place.

  6. Align the 4 driver air bag module locking pins to the openings in the steering wheel and position the driver air bag module in place.
  7. With the locking pins aligned and the driver air bag module positioned to the steering wheel, push inward, seating the 4 locking pins to the spring clips.
    • An audible click should be heard when the driver air bag module locking pins are seated in place to the spring clip. When the 4 locking pins are seated in place, there should be an even uniform gap between the driver air bag module trim cover and the steering wheel.

  8. Repower the system. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING .
