Section 476 (Engine): Removal: Engine

Special Tool(s)

  1. Remove the hood.
  2. Disconnect both battery cables. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  3. Remove the air cleaner and outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING .
  4. Remove the wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft. For additional information, refer to WIPERS AND WASHERS .
  5. Remove the accessory drive belt. .
  6. Remove the RH cowl extension.
    1. Remove the pin-type retainers.
    2. Remove the nuts.
    3. Remove the bolts.
    4. Remove the extension.

  7. Remove the LH cowl extension.
    1. Disconnect the electrical connector.
    2. Remove the bolts.
    3. Remove the extension.

  8. Drain the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  9. Disconnect the vacuum hose.

  10. Remove the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve.
    • Disconnect the three hoses.
    • Disconnect the electrical connector.
    • Remove the nut and the evaporative emission canister purge valve.

  11. Disconnect the accelerator cable and the speed control actuator cable.
    • Remove the bolts.
    • Disconnect the cables.

  12. Remove the accelerator cable and the speed control actuator cable from the clips and position out of the way.

  13. Disconnect the fuel spring lock connector. For additional information, refer to FUEL TANK & LINES .
  14. Disconnect the electrical connectors.

  15. Remove the electrical connection cover.

  16. Disconnect the power distribution power supply electrical connector.

  17. Disconnect the ground wire.

  18. Disconnect the A/C high pressure switch electrical connector.

  19. Disconnect the A/C low charge protection switch electrical connector.

  20. Disconnect the heater water hoses.

  21. Remove the ground strap.

  22. Disconnect the engine bulkhead connectors.

  23. Remove the bolt and position the power steering pump reservoir aside.

  24. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the water hose connection. Secure the hose to the radiator assembly.

  25. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the oil filter adapter.

  26. Remove the cooling fan. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  27. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to JACKING & HOISTING .
  28. Drain the engine oil.
    • Install the drain plug when finished.

  29. Disconnect the power steering electrical connector.

  31. Disconnect the power steering pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector.

  32. Remove the nut and the transmission cooler tube support bracket.

  33. Remove the bolt.

  34. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.

  35. Position the power steering pressure line bracket aside.

  36. Disconnect the engine wiring harness retainers from the A/C compressor.

  37. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.

  38. Remove the four bolts and position the A/C compressor aside.

  39. Remove the bolts and position the power steering pump aside.

  40. Remove the starter motor.
    • Remove the starter motor solenoid cover.
    • Disconnect the electrical connections.
    • Remove the bolts.
    • Remove the starter motor.

  41. Disconnect the transmission electrical connectors and the RH heated oxygen sensor electrical connectors.

  42. Disconnect the LH heated oxygen sensor electrical connector.

  43. Remove the LH heated oxygen sensor.

  44. Remove the four nuts.

  45. Remove the bolts and the inspection cover.

  46. Remove the torque converter nut access plug.
    • Remove the four nuts.

  47. Remove the four bolts and one stud.

  48. Remove the engine support insulator nuts.
  49. Lower the vehicle.
  50. Install the special tool to the RH cylinder head.

  51. Install the special tool to the LH cylinder head.

  52. Install the special tools.

  53. Support the transmission.
  54. Remove the bolts.

  55. Remove the engine assembly from the vehicle.
