Parasitic Draw Test

NOTE: Accurate parasitic draw testing requires use of an in-line digital ammeter. Due to the number of electronic modules, use of a test light or voltmeter is not an accurate method.
NOTE: A periodic pulsing of up to 80 milliamps is caused by the integrated control panel and should be considered normal.
  1. Ensure that junction box/fuse panels are accessible without turning on interior or underhood lights. Drive vehicle at least five minutes at speeds over 30 MPH. To allow modules time to time-out/powerdown, allow vehicle to sit with key off for 40 minutes. Go to next step.
  2. Install a fused jumper between negative battery post and negative battery cable. Without breaking connection of fused jumper, disconnect negative battery cable and connect tester between negative battery post and negative battery cable. If connection is broken entire process must be repeated. Go to next step.
  3. Connect ammeter between negative battery cable and negative battery post according to tool manufacturer's instructions. Remove fused jumper wire. With all accessories off, doors closed and key out of ignition, current drain should be less than 50 milliamps. Go to next step.
  4. To locate the cause of current drains greater than 50 milliamps, remove fuses one at a time until current draw is as specified. Repair appropriate circuit, and check system operation.
