Pinpoint Test B: The Abs Module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Mercury Mariner and 2008 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
  1. B1 CHECK THE ABS MODULE VOLTAGE SUPPLY CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C155 (Escape and Mariner) or C1462 (Hybrid)
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure voltage between the ABS module, harness side and ground as follows:
      ESCAPE AND MARINER

      ABS Connector-Pin Circuit
      C155-1 SBB09 (RD)
      C155-8 CBP34 (VT/BN)
      C155-32 SBB18 (YE/RD)
      HYBRID

      ABS Connector-Pin Circuit
      C1462-1 SBB09 (RD)
      C1462-17 SBB06 (BN/RD)
      C1462-29 CBP34 (VT/BN)
      C1462-32 SBB18 (YE/RD)
    • Are the voltages greater than 10 volts?
    1. YES  : Go to  B2.
    2. NO  : Escape and Mariner - VERIFY the battery junction box (BJB) fuse 18 (20A) and fuse 9 (40A) and the smart junction box (SJB) fuse 34 (5A) are OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.

Hybrid - VERIFY the battery junction box (BJB) fuse 6 (5A), fuse 9 (50A) and fuse 18 (50A) and the smart junction box (SJB) fuse 34 (5A) are OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.

  2. B2 CHECK THE ABS MODULE GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between the ABS module, harness side and ground as follows:
      ESCAPE AND MARINER

      ABS Connector-Pin Circuit
      C155-16 GD120 (BK/GN)
      HYBRID

      ABS Connector-Pin Circuit
      C1462-16 GD179 (BK/VT)
      C1462-47 GD113 (BK/YE)

    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
    1. YES  : Escape and Mariner - Go to  B3.

      Hybrid - Go to  B4.

    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
  3. B3 CHECK THE HS-CAN CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE ABS MODULE AND THE DATA LINK CONNECTOR (DLC) FOR AN OPEN - ESCAPE AND MARINER
    • Measure the resistance between the ABS module C155-12, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side; and between the ABS module C155-13, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side and the DLC C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
    • Fig 2: Measuring Resistance

    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
    1. YES  : Go to  B5.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
  4. B4 CHECK THE HS-CAN CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE ABS MODULE AND THE DATA LINK CONNECTOR (DLC) FOR AN OPEN - HYBRID
    • Measure the resistance between the ABS module C1462-30, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side; and between the ABS module C1462-15, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side and the DLC C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.

    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
    1. YES  : Go to  B5.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
  5. B5 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION
    • Disconnect the ABS module connector.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect the ABS module connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to VEHICLE DYNAMIC SYSTEMS article. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
