Cruise Control Systems: Description

NOTE: For information on Protege, refer to 323 procedures.

A main switch is used to turn system on and off. On B2200, B2600i, Miata, MX-6, RX7 & 626 models, a control switch, which controls SET, COAST, ACCEL and RESUME functions, is used to set or adjust desired speed. On 323 and 929 models, these functions are controlled from switches located on the steering wheel or steering column.

System will not operate at speeds under 25 MPH. If vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, and speed drops 5 MPH below the set speed, OD transmission function is canceled or prevented by the control unit.

When vehicle speed returns to within 2 MPH of set speed, and remains there for 20 seconds, OD transmission function is restored. Brake application cancels cruise control function and erases stored speed from control unit memory.

The control unit contains self-diagnostic capabilities. This function is activated through manipulation of the control switch(s). Fault codes will be outputted by flashes of the CRUISE light or a test light. CRUISE light is located next to the main switch button on RX7 models. All other models require installation of a test light at cruise control unit connector. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC INSPECTION  under TROUBLESHOOTING in this article.
